He’s called as SUPER STAR by the world. Thalaivar to his fans from Tamil Nadu. The rise of the phenomenon that is Rajinikanth is one to behold.

Shivaji Rao Gaekwad was just another bus conductor going about his job with the Bangalore Transport Service. He had a flair about him, the way he spoke, his actions. He was spotted by then famous playwright Topi Muniappa and made his foray into the world of drama. He was a natural actor in mythological plays, his voice captivating. He decided he wanted to pursue a career in acting. His family warned him against it, but with support and motivation from his friends, he moved to the Madras Film Institute.

There, he would meet his Guru, K Balachander. His life changed after meeting him. Balachander made him learn Tamil and gave him a chance with a negative role in his film Apoorva Raagangal. He was recognized and started making more movies. His style and screen presence were what helped him bring in the masses, building a following for himself.

He received critical acclaim for his performance in 16 Vayathinile, where he worked alongside Kamal Hassan. From there, everything was a step towards stardom. He has a whole array of cult classics to his name, Thalapathy, Thillu Mullu, Ninaithaale Inikkum, Johnny, Padikkadhavan, Sri Raghavendra, Padaiyappa, Baasha, Arunachalam, Sivaji and Enthiran are a few.

Rajinikanth isn’t just a Kollywood actor, he’s had his forays into other film industries as well. His role alongside Amitabh Bachchan in Andha Kanoon made waves, Bollywood got a glimpse of what he could do.

Rajinikanth entered Tamil Nadu with no proficiency in the language. But turns out today, there are fans for his films who don’t even understand the language, with him beating box office records in countries like Japan and Malaysia.
